So I’m not about to go all “Poverty Gospel” on my blog. I think the Poverty Gospel is as much an error in interpretation as the Prosperity Gospel. That said, I do think that God is very clear about how He feels about caring for the poor (including the fatherless and widows) in our world. I hope to (someday) put my thoughts together in a cohesive manner. Until then, here are some verses that I’ve found on the issue.
1 Samuel 2:8
“He raises the poor from the dust, He lifts the needy from the ash heap To make them sit with nobles, And inherit a seat of honor; For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, And He set the world on them.
He will have compassion on the poor and needy, And the lives of the needy he will save.

I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted And justice for the poor.

He who oppresses the poor taunts his Maker, But he who is gracious to the needy honors Him.
He who mocks the poor taunts his Maker; He who rejoices at calamity will not go unpunished
One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the LORD, And He will repay him for his good deed.
He who shuts his ear to the cry of the poor Will also cry himself and not be answered.
The rich and the poor have a common bond, The LORD is the maker of them all.
He who is generous will be blessed, For he gives some of his food to the poor.
He who oppresses the poor to make more for himself Or who gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.
Do not rob the poor because he is poor, Or crush the afflicted at the gate;
The righteous is concerned for the rights of the poor, The wicked does not understand such concern.
The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: The LORD gives light to the eyes of both.
The LORD enters into judgment with the elders and princes of His people,”It is you who have devoured the vineyard; The plunder of the poor is in your houses.
“What do you mean by crushing My people And grinding the face of the poor?” Declares the Lord GOD of hosts.
“Is this not the fast which I choose, To loosen the bonds of wickedness, To undo the bands of the yoke, And to let the oppressed go free And break every yoke? Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry And bring the homeless poor into the house; When you see the naked, to cover him; And not to hide yourself from your own flesh?”
‘They are fat, they are sleek, They also excel in deeds of wickedness; They do not plead the cause, The cause of the orphan, that they may prosper; And they do not defend the rights of the poor.
“Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had arrogance, abundant food and careless ease, but she did not help the poor and needy.
“The people of the land have practiced oppression and committed robbery, and they have wronged the poor and needy and have oppressed the sojourner without justice.
For I know your transgressions are many and your sins are great, You who distress the righteous and accept bribes And turn aside the poor in the gate.

Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
” THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND,TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED,
1 Corinthians 13:3
And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.
