This is one of my favorite poems of all time, and certainly my absolute favorite poem by Ms. Dickinson. It’s completely how my heart feels about adoption. We can’t stop the orphan crisis in our world, but if we can provide a home for one child (or two, or three), our lives will not be in vain.
If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.
